Why Worship?

With so many ideas and ideals of religion and spirituality, why salvation? Why worship an imaginary being in the sky who claims to be all knowing, all powerful, and ever present when what you see seems to be all you get?

Well, allow me to share with you a little of my “why.”

I grew up in church ⛪️ , literally! I have been in church since birth. I have traveled across continents and have explored different modalities of worship. I have studied what others proclaim to be their faiths. But it wasn’t until I experienced something truly magnificent on my own did I understand why.

In 2005, at a Conference for Christian Collegiate Students, I experienced something that literally changed my life. At an evening worship service, the worship leader lead an altar call with the song, “Here I am to Worship!” For those not familiar with the song, the chorus says, “Here I am to worship. Here I am to bow down. Here I am to say that Your MY God!” It continues with, “You’re altogether lovely, altogether worthy, altogether wonderful to Me!”

As if that wasn’t enough to bring me to my knees ( and it was!), the vamp of the song says, “I’ll never know how much it cost, to see MY sins upon that cross!” My, Oh my! I was done! I gave it all! I surrendered my life for His purpose all in that moment! To know that someone whom I’ve never seen, who had only heard of me, was willing to take on every dirty thought, every side eye , and every vindictive word that would spew from my mouth, just to show me what real love means… I couldn’t help but to sacrifice my selfish ways to suffice his selfless purpose!

Just think about it… Have you ever felt like you had to carry your family? Or maybe you sacrifice and raise your children alone? Or maybe you felt responsible for your friend because they just didn’t know? How heavy a burden that is to carry! Yet, Jesus bore the sins of the WORLD on his shoulders! He carried that weight so you wouldn’t have to! He took those stripes so you could be healed! He loved you enough to leave his own family so you would have peace in raising yours! That my friend is true love! A love like no other!

And so the song continues, “ So here I am to worship, Here I am to bow down, Here I am to say that You are MY GOD! You are altogether lovely, altogether worthy, and altogether wonderful to Me!” That’s my WHY! He cared enough to come see about little ol’ me! This is why I worship!This is why I #choose2believe!
